15 Career Moves Beyond the Ladder and How to Choose Yours

Career Paths Aren’t Dead. They’ve Just Never Been Ladders.

Your career is a series of intentional moves – some planned, some serendipitous, all of them opportunities to grow, learn, and discover what’s next.

The key is understanding which type of move serves you right now.

This guide introduces 15 common career moves, helps you identify which category aligns with what you’re seeking, and offers a practical diagnostic to clarify your next step.

The 15 Career Moves

Seeking More Impact (3 moves for expanding influence)

Ladder Move: Step up to higher leadership within your field; driving bigger decisions, leading teams, owning more significant outcomes.

Scope Expansion: Take on broader responsibility without changing titles (e.g. from managing Spain to managing Europe). Stretching your capabilities while maintaining current relationships.

Specialisation: Become the recognised expert in your niche; deepening mastery and building authority in specific domains.

Seeking Breathing Room (4 moves for creating space without sacrifice)

Re-scaling Move: Right-size your workload without derailing momentum (e.g. full-time to part-time, reducing scope intentionally).

Career Break: Create intentional space for reflection or renewal. A deliberate pause that strengthens rather than disrupts your narrative.

Legacy Move: Shift from ‘doing’ to ‘guiding.’ Leveraging wisdom through mentorship, advisory roles, or non-executive positions without owning daily execution.

Reprioritisation Move: Align work with your current life priorities, sometimes taking a less senior role to emphasise values over titles.

Seeking New Territory (3 moves for pivoting without starting over)

Lateral Move: Apply your strengths in adjacent spaces. Shifting to a different function while using transferable skills.

Transitional Move: Shift industries while leveraging transferable skills (e.g. Key Account Manager from agriculture to pharmaceuticals).

Passion Project: Create space for meaningful work alongside your career. Pursuing creative outlets or purpose-driven work without making it your primary income.

Seeking Transformation (5 moves for fundamental shifts)

Reskilling: Build new capabilities for an entirely different direction. Acquiring qualifications to pivot into a new field.

Entrepreneurship: Create something that’s fully yours. Starting a business or venture based on a vision that won’t let go.

Consulting: Leverage expertise on your own terms. Sharing knowledge with autonomy and impact without organisational constraints.

Portfolio Career: Build multiple income streams aligned with your skill. Combining roles that resist being defined by a single position.

Cross-Border Move: Gain global perspective through international work. Transitioning to a role in a different country for cultural immersion and professional growth.

Finding Your Career Move

Time required: 15-25 minutes

How it works: Read each statement below and rate how strongly it resonates with you right now, using this scale:

4 = Agree / Mostly true

3 = Neutral / Somewhat true

2 = Disagree / Mostly not true

1 = Strongly disagree / Not true at all

After rating all statements, total your scores for each category to identify which type of move aligns best with what you’re seeking.

Interpreting Your Scores

Your highest score indicates which category of career moves currently aligns with what you’re seeking:

Highest in Section A (More Impact)? You’re ready to expand your influence through ladder moves, scope expansion, or specialisation.

Highest in Section B (Breathing Room)? You’re looking to create space through re-scaling, career breaks, legacy moves, or reprioritisation.

Highest in Section C (New Territory)? You’re ready to pivot without starting over through lateral moves, transitional moves, or passion projects.

Highest in Section D (Transformation)? You’re seeking fundamental shifts through reskilling, entrepreneurship, consulting, portfolio careers, or cross-border moves.

Tied scores or close results? This suggests you’re at an intersection; exploring moves from multiple categories might serve you well.

Staying vs. Moving

Within your highest-scoring category, consider this clarifying question:

Are you primarily seeking to:

  • STAY in your current organizational context (same employer, same geography, same general environment) while changing your role, scope, or focus?
  • MOVE to a new context (new employer, new industry, new geography, independent work) as part of your next career move?

This distinction helps you narrow which specific moves within your category are most feasible right now.

Deep Dive Into Your Results

START HERE: Return to the descriptions of the 15 moves at the beginning of this guide and focus on the 3-5 moves within your highest-scoring category.

For Seeking More Impact

Reflection prompts:

• Which type of impact matters most to you right now; leading people, influencing strategy, or becoming a recognised expert?

• Are you ready for the increased visibility and accountability that typically comes with expanded impact?

• Does your current organisation have room for the type of impact you’re seeking, or would you need to move contexts?

Next steps:

• Identify 2-3 roles (internal or external) that would represent the kind of impact move you’re seeking

• Have conversations with people who’ve made similar moves to understand the transition

• Assess what skills, experiences, or relationships you’d need to strengthen to make this move credible

For Seeking Breathing Room

Reflection prompts:

• What would “breathing room” specifically give you? E.g. time for family, health, creative pursuits, strategic thinking, or simply rest?

• Is this a temporary recalibration or a longer-term lifestyle shift?

• What’s the minimum viable version of breathing room that would make a meaningful difference?

Next steps:

• Define what “enough” looks like – how much reduction in hours, intensity, or scope would create the space you need?

• Explore examples of people who’ve successfully re-scaled or stepped back without derailing their careers

• Consider whether your current employer could accommodate this shift, or if you’d need to move contexts.

For Seeking New Territory

Reflection prompts:

• What’s drawing you to new territory? E.g. boredom with your current context, curiosity about something new, or a sense that your skills are transferable beyond where you’ve applied them?

• Are you looking to leverage existing strengths in a new setting, or develop entirely new capabilities?

• How much uncertainty and learning curve are you willing to tolerate?

Next steps:

• Identify the adjacent spaces (functions, industries, geographies) where your skills would be valued

• Connect with people who’ve made similar transitions to understand what the shift actually entails

• Start small – explore passion projects or side experiments before making full transitions

For Seeking Transformation

Reflection prompts:

• What’s driving this desire for transformation? E.g. a clear vision pulling you forward, or dissatisfaction pushing you away from your current situation?

• Are you energised or daunted by the idea of starting over in some ways?

• What would success look like in 3-5 years if you made this transformation?

Next steps:

• Be honest about your risk tolerance; transformation moves often involve income volatility, steep learning curves, and uncertainty

• Identify what you’d need to build, learn, or secure before making this move viable

• Seek out mentors or advisors who’ve successfully navigated similar transformations

What Now?

Career clarity isn’t about finding the “perfect” move. It’s about making intentional choices that reflect what you really want. Not what you think you should want.

The 15 moves in this guide aren’t exhaustive, and your career will likely include several of them over time. The goal is to identify which type of move serves your growth right now.
